Man critically hurt after speeding from police, crashing van
A 48-year-old man is in hospital after crashing his van while trying to speed from police Monday night in Winnipeg.
It happened at about 10:45 p.m.
According to police, the Dodge Caravan was racing southbound on Balmoral Street, between Cumberland Avenue and Notre Dame Avenue, when it narrowly missed sideswiping a police cruiser.
Officers tried to pull it over but backed off the chase due to the unsafe speed and erratic driving by the suspect.
The police helicopter, AIR-1, then became involved and tracked the van from above.
The van continued racing along Ellice Avenue when it hit a car stopped at a red light on Arlington Street, police said, adding that no one was injured.
The van sped from that scene, nearly had a head-on collision with another vehicle, and continued until it crashed with construction equipment on Ellice at Milt Stegall Way.
The crash left the van crumpled and inoperable.
The driver, who suffered serious lower body injuries, was taken into custody and transported to hospital in critical condition. He is facing numerous charges.
