Later that day, police were investigating at a house in the 100 block of Barrington Avenue, in the city's St. Vital neighbourhood. Three people were taken in for questioning at that time.

Investigators say they believe Custer and the accused had been arguing at the house where they both lived, when the man took a knife and stabbed her once in the upper body.

The accused then drove the victim to the hospital, said Const. Eric Hofley.

"He actually requested the assistance of somebody else that was within the residence to drive," Hofley told reporters on Thursday.

"She was taken to the hospital, if not immediately, within minutes after the incident occurring."

Custer's death is the city's fifth homicide of the year.

Police remained at the scene Thursday morning.
