Winnipeg police have charged a 32-year-old man in connection with a sexual assault on a woman outside a house party almost two years ago.

The assault happened on Oct. 12, 2012, during a house party in the 600 block of Panet Road.

The 58-year-old woman told officers she had gone outside to smoke when she was confronted by an unknown man and a "serious sexual assault" took place, police stated in a news release Monday.

The suspect ran away, the victim went back inside the house and police were notified.

The police service's sex crimes unit investigated the case, and officers arrested the man late Friday afternoon near McDermot Avenue and Gertie Street.

The man remains in custody. Police say he has a long criminal history.
