Man charged after boating death at the Forks
A man has been charged with impaired operation of a vessel causing death and refusing a breath sample after a boating mishap near The Forks in downtown Winnipeg Saturday night.
Police said an aluminum boat capsized on the swift-flowing Assiniboine River around 8:30 p.m.
Two men, neither wearing a life jacket, fell into the river. One man was rescued and taken to hospital. The other man, 37, was swept down the Assiniboine River and into the Red River. He is presumed drowned.
Winnipeg Police said the survivor, John Petriew, 35, has been charged with impaired operation of a vessel and refusing a breath sample. Boating had been banned on both waterways due to high water levels.
