A 23-year-old man was rushed to hospital in critical condition after a shooting in Winnipeg's West Kildonan neighbourhood on Sunday night.

Police were called to an apartment building in the 400 block of Partridge Avenue at about 9 p.m. The call was about a crash, but instead, officers found the man sitting in a car, suffering from a gunshot wound.

Shooting scene

The Winnipeg police identification unit on Monday looks over the minivan in which a man was found suffering from a gunshot wound on Sunday night.

The man was rushed to hospital and later upgraded to stable condition. Police don’t yet know what prompted the shooting.

“Right now, we don’t have a clear picture as to the motivation — why this took place, why this individual may have been targeted,” said Const. Jason Michalyshen.

CBC has been told the victim was a high-ranking member of a Winnipeg street gang, but police would not confirm if the shooting was gang-related.

Margaret Damsma lives right by where the crash happened, and when she woke on Monday morning she saw a van had crashed into her friend Lil Hotz’s vehicle.

“I come out this morning and saw more tapes, and I thought, ‘Oh it’s her car. Maybe mine is next, maybe,’” she said.

Hotz, a senior, will now be without a vehicle for the remainder of the holidays.
