A Manitoba town is considering increasing liquor taxes to pay for RCMP services.

Swan River's deputy Mayor Jason Delaurier said he came up with the plan because the town's annual grant from the province doesn't cover all RCMP costs — and much of the work RCMP officers do, deals with alcohol related crime.

"Alcohol does play a factor in some crimes. It plays a factor in some accidents, so it’s helping offset costs it also helps create," he said.

"In my mind, one dollar that we raise from this tax is one dollar that doesn't have to be borne by the property taxpayers."

The idea will be discussed by Swan River's council.

But the province would still need to give final approval.
