Martin St. Louis scored midway through the third period and added an empty net goal with 26 seconds left in the game en route to a 4-2 win over the Winnipeg Jets Tuesday night at the MTS Centre.
With Michael Frolik in the penalty box for boarding, St. Louis capped off a nice passing play, redirecting a Victor Hedman pass in front to beat Jets goaltender Ondrej Pavelec.
He later was left all alone up the boards where he deposited the puck in to the empty net.
With the loss, Winnipeg drops to 19-22-5 on the year and snaps a three-game win streak at home.
The Lightning improve to 26-13-4 with the win and finish 2-1 on their three-game roadie through western Canada.
Pavelec returned to the net after sitting out Sunday’s 6-5 loss to the Pittsburgh Penguins. He made 29 saves in the loss, falling to 11-18-4 on the year. Pavelec has now dropped nine of his last 11 starts.
Bolts goalie Anders Lindback made 12 saves for the win.
It didn’t take long for the Lightning to take the lead as they scored just 1:20 into the game. Valtteri Filppula notched his 17th of the season, capping off a nice rush with a shot that beat Pavelec's glove.
With the Jets looking sluggish, defenceman Mark Stuart tried to turn the momentum in the game by dropping the gloves with Lightning winger Ryan Malone. The two danced for a bit before Stuart landed five good ones and earned the takedown.
The Jets evened the game up on a five-on-three power play with a goal from veteran forward Olli Jokinen. With Filppula already in the box, Lindback was given an additional two for shooting the puck over the glass. Jokinen capitalized 12 seconds later, finishing off a cross-crease pass from Mark Scheifele.
Forward Blake Wheeler left the game midway through the period after taking a shot off the ankle from Bolts defenceman Sami Salo. After a brief stint in the dressing room, he returned to the ice and showed no ill effects from the shot.
The Jets would take their first lead in the game 4:45 into the second period, scoring once again on the power play. Dustin Byfuglien gained the blue line before ripping a shot past a screened Lindback for his 10th of the year.
A goal from Lightning forward Ondrej Palat made it 2-2 late in the period. Palat’s eighth of the season was the result of a beautiful passing play that left little chance for Pavelec, who helplessly sprawled out to make the save.
It was the second meeting between these two teams this year. The Jets capped off a season-high six-game roadie earlier in the year with a 2-1 overtime win against the Bolts back on Dec. 7.
