The Winnipeg Jets' star rookie Mark Scheifele has been sidelined for several weeks.

The 20-year-old forward, who centers the Jets second line, went down Tuesday night in a home game against the New York Islanders.

Scheifele collided with Islanders' defenceman Calvin de Haan midway through the second period. He hit the ice, writhing in pain and was helped off by teammates.

The Jets have said he suffered a sprain to the MCL (medial collateral ligament), one of the four major ligaments of the knee.

He won't need surgery but it's an injury that could keep him out at least four weeks.

Head coach Paul Maurice told media on Wednesday that they can check back in two to three weeks, but it's never that soon.

Scheifele, who has tallied 13 goals and 21 assists this season, and sports a +9 rating, is one of the NHL's leading rookies.
