The Winnipeg Jets scored a goal in each period en route to a 3-0 win over the Buffalo Sabres in a New Years Eve battle Tuesday night at the MTS Centre.
Keaton Ellerby opened the scoring in the first, beating Sabres tender, Jhonas Enroth, with an innocent shot blocker side. Jacob Trouba would give the Jets a two goal cushion 13:06 in the second, scoring his third of the year with a howitzer from the point and Anthony Peluso added an empty net goal with 1:28 left in the game.
Chris Thorburn recorded the first assist on Trouba’s goal to make his 500th NHL game a memorable one.
Al Montoya made 27 saves to earn his 5th career shutout and second of the season. Monotya has now won three straight and boasts an 8-2-1 record on the year. Jhonas Enroth started in net for the Sabres, earning his eighth loss of the season, falling to 1-8-3.
With the win, the Jets improve to 19-18-5 on the year and even the season series with Buffalo at a game a piece. The Sabres drop to 11-25-4 with the loss, further cementing their spot as the worst ranked team in the NHL.
It’s the just the second time the Jets have won more than two consecutive games this season. The only other time came during a three-game win streak in mid-November. The Jets also extended their win streak at the MTS Centre to three games.
Winnipeg opened the scoring midway through the first period after Ellerby snuck a slap shot from the blue line past the blocker of Enroth for his second of the season.
The Sabres looked to tie things up after forward Marcus Foligno banged in a bouncing puck in front with 5:21 to go in the opening frame but the play was immediately waved off thanks to a post that was dislodged from its moorings. The goal would be reviewed and the call would be confirmed.
The Jets missed a number of quality chances in the period including a last minute breakaway by defenceman Dustin Byfuglien. Byfuglien left the box after serving a minor penalty for tripping and Blake Wheeler found the big man behind the Sabres defence but his shot would go high and over the net.
Trouba made it 2-0 for the Jets 13:06 in to the second period, teeing up a pass from Thorburn for his third of the year. Peluso scored his second of the year with the empty netter.
Tobias Enstrom led all Jets with 22:15 of ice time.
