The Winnipeg Humane Society is offering deals on dogs and a clearance on cats this weekend in an effort to find new homes for its abundance of animals.
The shelter has 500 more cats and dogs than it did at this time last year, so it is lowering adoption prices from Oct. 16 to 18 to draw in potential pet owners.
"We're a little overcrowded here, so we just want to get these animals into their forever homes," said Lisa Rosen, who is in charge of shelter operations.
In September alone, the shelter took in more than 9,000 cats and dogs, of which 640 were strays, she said, adding that she has no explanation as to why so many pets are coming in.
On Friday, Saturday and Sunday, cats older than six months will be $25 to adopt and dogs over six months will be $75. The usual rate is $79 for cats and $199 for dogs.
Kittens six months old and younger will be available for $25 off the regular fee of $129.
The shelter is also in desperate need of temporary foster homes for cats and dogs, as well as wet canned food.
