Hockey player jailed for attacking referee
A Winnipeg hockey player has been sentenced to one year in jail after a referee was viciously attacked during a recreational game last June.
Lance Guimond, 25, was handed a one year jail term after pleading guilty to a charge of assault causing bodily harm.
The referee was knocked out cold and kicked in the head with a skate.
Peter Woods, Executive Director of Hockey Manitoba said the case is the most violent he has heard of in this province.
"Certainly the incident is very shocking anytime somebody violently attacks someone," he said. "The game of hockey is certainly damaged."
Woods said Guimond was also a certified ref with Hockey Manitoba about 10 years ago.
