A new gym is coming to a 102-year-old school in Winnipeg's Wolseley neighbourhood.
Funding for a gym at Laura Secord elementary school was announced Tuesday by the province — a day after a new gym was announced for Kelvin High School.
"It's so important that our young people lead healthy, active lives," said Education and Advanced Learning Minister James Allum.
"The funding I'm announcing today will ensure students here have greater opportunities to be involved in sports and other physical activities."
Built in 1912, Laura Secord is a nursery to Grade 6 school with approximately 535 students. The gym addition will be some 4,000 square feet with space for change rooms, washrooms, storage and a teacher's office.
The old gymnasium will continue to be used but discussions are underway on how to re-purpose it.
Construction will likely begin next year with the new gym completed in late 2016.
