A seven-year-old girl has died from her injuries in a head-on crash that took place late Tuesday night in Winnipeg's River Heights neighbourhood.
It happened just after 11 p.m. CT Tuesday on Academy Road and Wilton Street, when a van and a sport-utility vehicle collided, causing one of the vehicles to burst into flames.
According to police, the van was heading eastbound on Academy Road while the SUV was driving west, and both vehicles collided as they approached Wilton Street.
The five people in the van — a man, woman and three children — were taken to hospital.
Two of the children, under the age of 10, were transported to hospital in critical condition, but police announced late Wednesday afternoon that one child, a seven-year-old girl, has succumbed to her injuries.
The second child remains in critical condition, according to police. The two adults and third child were last reported to be in stable condition.
The male driver of the SUV, that vehicle's only occupant, was treated at the scene for minor injuries.
The vehicles were not towed from the scene until just before 7 a.m. on Wednesday. Academy was closed in both directions between Guelph and Cambridge streets for many hours before reopening at about 7:15 a.m.
No charges have been laid at this time.
