Environment Canada issued severe thunderstorm warnings for parts of southern Manitoba, including Winnipeg and the Interlake late Friday.

And the unstable weather may continue: temperatures over the next week are forecast to be between 27 C and 31 C.

But you'll need to endure a storm of mosquitoes if you want to enjoy the weather. The skeeters are back in big numbers, prompting the City of Winnipeg to resume fogging.

Trap counts must have a city-wide average of 25 for two consecutive days, and one city quadrant must be a count of near 100 in order to warrant fogging.

On Friday morning, the city-wide average was 103 and one trap near Assiniboine Park was jammed with 1,128.

In spite of those numbers, Winnipeg's insect control superintendent Ken Nowalsky said things are looking up.

"What we're expecting and based on our current surveillance, there is very little mosquito activity in terms of the larval development in the water," he said Friday. "Things are starting to dry out, which is the first time I can say that in a long time, which is great."

So far this year, the city has done two rounds of fogging, cutting the second round short last weekend after weather prevented trucks from completing their work and trap counts dropped sharply.

Storm watch

The fogging can only be done if the weather co-operates and late Friday, parts of Winnipeg got hail the size of twoonies.

Environment Canada upgraded a severe thunderstorm watch to a warning for a large part of southern and southeast Manitoba, including Winnipeg late Friday. By evening, the severe thunderstorm warnings were concentrated in the southeast.
