Developers revealed what the inside of a 21-storey condo building slated for downtown Winnipeg will look like on Thursday.

The "Glasshouse" condos are expected to open across from the MTS Centre in 2016 and will be part of a new Centrepoint project that will see a large retail space and hotel installed at 311 Portage Avenue.

The units range in size from about 400 to 800 square feet, many with balconies.

A new model in City Place mall is now open to the public to show prospective buyers what the units will look like.

The model unit showed the building will be primarily glass, while the inside of its units will have an industrial feel.

The building is being installed as part of a plan to rejuvenate Winnipeg’s downtown area and will sit between Hargrave Street and Donald Street facing Portage Avenue.

"All of us want to have sustainable, diverse, vibrant cities and that requires people living downtown," said David Wex of Urban Capital, the property group working on the project. "I hope that we’re big agents of change for that."

The units start at $169,000.

Glass condos are typically more affordable than buildings made with more traditional materials, but there have been some problems in other Canadian cities with the buildings’ longevity.

The condos go on sale this weekend.
