A 51-year-old man has been charged after a 15-year-old girl was allegedly driven outside Winnipeg limits and sexually assaulted at knifepoint.

According to police, two 15-year-old girls were walking Saturday night near William Avenue and Isabel Street in the city's Centennial neighbourhood when they accepted a ride from a man in a van.

One of the girls was dropped off on Redwood Avenue but police say the other was taken north on McPhillips Street, outside the city.

The girl managed to get the man's cell phone and messaged her friend to call police just before the man turned to the girl with a knife and began sexually assaulting her.

While he was assaulting her, a phone message came that police had been called.

The man drove the girl back into the city and dropped her off near Jefferson Avenue and Salter Street in the West Kildonan neighbourhood.

Police later found the man in his vehicle in the area of McPhillips Street and Court Avenue in West Kildonan. He has been charged with sexual assault, sexual interference, and failure to comply with probation order.

He has been detained at the Provincial Remand Centre.
