Future of Winnipeg housing project for homeless uncertain
Housing project for homeless faces federal funding lapse
The future of a housing initiative in Winnipeg remains uncertain, with federal funding set to expire at the end of the month.
At Home or Chez Soi provides housing to Winnipeg’s homeless as well as addictions and mental health treatment.
It’s part of a national study with locations in Winnipeg, Moncton, Montreal, Toronto and Vancouver.
Residents at Winnipeg’s At Home location say it has changed their lives and helped them resolve mental health issues and find employment. The program has also shown promise in other cities such as Moncton.
Winnipeg’s location was given four years of funding, which expires at the end of March. So far, neither the province or the federal government has stepped up to say the funding for the project will be renewed.
In the mean time, the federal government has provided the existing participants housing subsidies that will last one year.
Officials with the federal government said talks are underway to review how the program can continue.
