A former town employee in Leaf Rapids, Man., has been charged with fraud, theft and forgery related to suspicious banking activities this summer.
William Horodecki, 34, has been charged with two counts each of fraud, theft under $5,000, forgery and using a forged document.
RCMP say an investigation revealed that between July 9 and 15, two Town of Leaf Rapids cheques were stolen, forged and cashed.
Horodecki was an employee of the Town of Leaf Rapids when the matter came to light, but he no longer works there.
He becomes the second town official in Leaf Rapids to face criminal charges.
In an unrelated case, Mayor Geraldine Cockerill was charged last December with 28 charges that include fraud, forgery and theft of mail.
According to RCMP, investigators found "a number of fraudulent transactions," including forged signatures on Employment and Income Assistance cards and cheques, between December 2009 and April 2010, when Cockerill was working at the Leaf Rapids post office.
Cockerill has maintained that she is innocent, saying she believes her case stems from a misunderstanding involving a former resident.
Horodecki has been released on a promise to appear in court in Leaf Rapids on Nov. 7 — the same day Cockerill is scheduled to appear in connection with her charges.
