Shelley Hart, former Winnipeg Police Service deputy chief, is jumping into politics as a mayoral candidate for East St Paul.

Hart retired from the WPS in February after a 36-year career. She served as deputy chief from 2008 until 2014.

She said her time at the executive level of the police service has taught her valuable skills for dealing with government.

"I also have worked very closely with very high levels of the City of Winnipeg over the years, as well as the province of Manitoba, so I have really good relations with those governments and those levels," said said at a press conference on Tuesday.

The current East St. Paul mayor is Lawrence Morris. It is not clear if he is running again.
