Winnipeg hockey fans crossed their fingers and hoped the Jets would pull off a win against the Washington Capitals on Tuesday night, but the team failed to deliver.

The Jets have been hoping to slide into a playoff spot before their regular season ends on Thursday.

The stakes were high as the Jets entered Tuesday night's match in Washington. But the team lost 5-3, meaning they remain one point out of the final playoff spot in the NHL's Eastern Conference.

"It’s been a really good year, and I hope it’s this year they are going to make the playoffs," former Jets player Thomas Steen told CBC News prior to the game.

"If it’s not, we will do it next year."
