Eating your greens is good for you but lately it appears that it comes at a price — an increase that appears to be higher in Manitoba.
The 23 per cent rise in produce costs over the last year seems due to the short growing season here, high transport costs in Manitoba and feeling the effects of suppliers who have had lower yields for a variety of reasons.
After speaking with a number of people — from moms to grocers to bloggers, CBC News has culled some of the best ways to save some green when buying your greens:
Buy only items you need
Some vegetables like cauliflower and broccoli have more than doubled in price lately. Wait until they get price reductions, later in the week. But keep in mind that buyers are buying less as well.
Some stores have weekly deals that you can take advantage of. Winnipeg blogger Nadine at Save Money in Winnipeg does the legwork for a number of local stores, telling you about the best deals, especially close to the weekend.
Look for deals
Consider the slightly wilted veggies offered on specific racks at some stores. You can often get 50 per cent off a bag of red peppers, or soft bananas, or strawberries near the end of their prime.
Think long term
Buy produce that lasts a long time, like apples, squash, and root vegetables.
Join a group
Consider joining a foodshare group where you sign up for regular pick-ups/deliveries of home grown produce in season. Community Supported Agriculture (CSA) is a good source of information for doing this.
