It's a digital currency, but Bitcoin, accepted by a just handful of businesses in Winnipeg, has a physical presence in the city as of Saturday.

The first Bitcoin ATM has opened at Santa Lucia Pizza on St. Mary's Road, one of the local businesses that recognize it as currency.

Nick Burley of Bitteller, the company that installed the ATM, said even though one Bitcoin costs about $815, you don't have to buy a whole Bitcoin.

You can buy, perhaps not surprisingly, just a bit of it.

"You can put your cash in and you can buy $200 worth of Bitcoin and use that as a medium to transfer," he said.

  • An earlier version of this story incorrectly called Bitcoin a company that installed a new ATM in Winnipeg on Feb. 15. In fact, a company called Bitteller installed the machine, which dispenses Bitcoin currency.
