Winnipeg police shut down a portion of Portage Avenue near Assiniboine Park Tuesday afternoon after a massive fire broke out.

Plumes of dark smoke could be seen coming from the area around 2 p.m., and officers closed Portage Avenue at Ferry Road.

A plastic liner inside a culvert that stretches under eight lanes of Portage was on fire, according to district chief Ian Campbell.

The blaze was quickly extinguished, but the road remained closed to traffic for hours.

Inspectors will have to see if any damage has been done the roadway before the area can be reopened, Campbell said.

“We’re just waiting on structural people to give us an idea of what if any damage we have on the street so that’s what we’re looking at right now,” said Campbell.

He said there are also environmental tests being done on the nearby creek.

There is no word yet on what caused the fire.
