Winnipeg firefighters spent part of Friday night dealing with a fire near the top of a downtown apartment building.
Crews were called to the highrise in the 100 block of Smith Street, just south of York Avenue, just after 7 p.m.
Heavy smoke was coming out of the 22nd floor of the building. The fire appears to have been contained to one of the bedrooms in a suite, according to fire officials at the scene.
No one was inside the suite when the fire started, they added.
Transit buses were called in to provide temporary shelter for residents who got out of their suites.
One tenant, Janelle-Marie Emond, told CBC News she could smell smoke from her 17th-floor suite.
"I could smell it from, like, when I came outside of my suite, out through my door — I could smell it, and I thought, 'Hmmm, I better go down,'" she said.
"As soon as I came down, I realized this has got to be real because there's this many fire department people here."
The cause of the fire is under investigation. Damages are estimated at $500,000, according to fire officials.
