Two people suffered smoke inhalation after a fire broke out in a highrise apartment building in Winnipeg's St. Boniface neighbourhood.

A woman was sent to hospital in stable condition while a second person was treated at the scene, fire officials said.

Emergency crews were called to the 15-storey highrise — a Manitoba Housing building at 101 Marion St., just across from the Norwood Hotel — at about 6:45 a.m. on Wednesday.

Fire officials said the blaze was contained to one suite on the 14th floor and is mostly out. The suite below it, on the 13th floor, had some water damage.

There was no need to evacuate the building, officials said.

Crews remained at the scene, blocking Marion to traffic, until just after 8 a.m. The road is clear now.
