Driver who hit girl won't be charged
Charges won't be laid in a crash that hurt an 11-year-old girl in Winnipeg's St. James neighbourhood on Wednesday.
The girl, who was struck while walking across Portage Avenue near Ferry Road just after 3:30 p.m., was rushed to hospital in critical condition.
She has since been upgraded to stable condition, though she has serious injuries to her lower body.
Police said a 22-year-old man was driving a pickup truck and approaching the intersection on a red light and began slowing down when the light turned green. He went past other vehicles that were still stopped, waiting for the girl, though he couldn't see that.
The girl then ran out into the path of the truck.
Portage at Ferry was closed to traffic for several hours as a result of the crash.
The investigation is continuing, police said.
