A second farmers' market is set to open in downtown Winnipeg.

The new market, located on Broadway in the courtyard of the Workers Compensation Board, was launched Wednesday by the Downtown Biz.

The second location was prompted by the unexpected and overwhelming success of the market inside the Manitoba Hydro building. That one opened in 2013 and drew more than 7,000 visitors in its first season, according to the Biz.

"The response was incredible," said Biz chair Sachit Mehra.

"Our [Hydro building] farmers’ market has a waiting list of vendors and we continuously field calls from those who are interested in selling at the market,” said Stefano Grande, executive director of the Biz.

“With a new location added, we can extend this successful program to even more vendors and producers, ultimately benefiting the entire community with increased access to local, healthy food options."

All of the interest has also inspired discussions about starting a year-round indoor market, Grande said.

The Broadway market will be held every Monday, 10 a.m. until 4 p.m., from July 7 to Aug. 25.

People can expect fresh produce, baked empanadas, panzerotti, perogies, vinegars, jams, pastured pork and chicken, home style Mexican salsa, gluten free macaroons, potatoes, bison meat, and preserves, stated a news release from the Biz.

The market in the Hydro building runs on Thursdays, 10 a.m. until 4 p.m., from June 5 to Oct. 9.
