A man's dead body was found in a Winnipeg bus shelter on a bitterly cold Tuesday morning.

Emergency crews were called to the scene at Maryland Street and Sargent Avenue, in the city's West End, at about 5:30 a.m.

Police have taped off the shelter and are guarding the scene. The identification unit is investigating and was seen removing items from inside the shelter.

Police had no further information. They said the cause of death will be known once an autopsy has been performed.

The temperature in downtown Winnipeg at the time was –16 C but feels more like –21 with the wind chill.

Drivers should be aware that the curb lane in the area will be blocked to traffic for some time.
