Cyclist fighting for his life may have been drunk, say police

A 40-year-old man remains in critical condition in hospital after he was hit by a vehicle around 2 a.m. Saturday near Salter Street and College Avenue.

A 40-year-old man remains in critical condition in hospital after he was hit by a vehicle around 2 a.m. Saturday near Salter Street and College Avenue. 

Winnipeg police said the early stages of their investigation show the cyclist was eastbound when he left the lane between College Avenue and Boyd Avenue and without stopping rode into the path of a southbound van. 

He was taken to hospital and remains in critical condition. 

Police said the driver stopped immediately, called 911 and remained on scene.

They said alcohol consumption by the cyclist is considered a factor.

Traffic investigators are still looking into the incident and anyone with information is asked to contact investigators at 204-986-6271.
