Winnipeg firefighters fought side-by-side house fires in the blazing heat Friday afternoon.

Crews were called first to 51 Nichol Ave. in St. Vital. They doused flames on that house, and tried to keep the fire from spreading to a neighbouring home.

But the attics of both homes were heavily damaged by flames.

District Fire Chief Alden Darragh says the heat and humidity didn't help firefighters.

"It's extremely hard when the temperature and the humidity is this high," he said. "Crews tire out very quickly. Imagine working with a snowmobile suit on in this weather. That's what its like."

Damage to both homes is extensive.

There were no injuries. The cause is under investigation.
