One person is dead after a two-vehicle crash just east of Portage la Prairie on the Trans-Canada Highway Friday evening.

The RCMP said emergency crews responded to the call around 5:30 p.m.

Police said a Toyota Matrix was struck from behind by a Ford Ranger while both vehicles were travelling in the westbound lanes.

A rear passenger in the Toyota, an adult woman, was pronounced dead at the scene. She had been identified as a 48-year-old woman from Winnipeg. Her name will not be released.

The driver and front-seat passenger of the Toyota, a male and female, were taken to hospital and treated for minor injuries.

Police said the driver of the Ford Ranger was a 17-year-old girl from the RM of Portage la Prairie who was treated for minor injuries at the scene.

An RCMP traffic collision analyst as well as a criminal crash investigation team are trying to determine what caused the collision.

Police said the westbound lanes of the Trans-Canada Highway are expected to remain closed until at least 10 p.m.
