Winnipeg police said their strategy to combat violent crime in the city is working.

A City of Winnipeg report released Thursday morning shows between 2011 and 2012, overall violent crime dropped city-wide by 3.4 per cent.

The biggest reduction was in the North End, which saw a 18.9 per cent drop in violent crime from 2011 to 2012. The decrease was in a portion of the entire North End district, where police cracked down on crime and increased the number of officers in the area.

A similar strategy was employed on a portion of Portage Avenue. That area saw a14.5 per cent from 2011 to 2012.
