City mosquito buffer zones reduced
The province has agreed to reduce Winnipeg's mosquito spray buffer zones from 100 to 90 metres.
The city said Wednesday it received approval from Manitoba's Conservation Department to amend the pesticide use permit and reduce the size of buffer zones by 10 metres when spraying outdoors to control mosquitoes.
The city had proposed to study how the insecticide Malathion drifts in various wind and weather conditions but that won't be necessary now that the province has agreed to reduce the size of the residential buffer zones.
Property owners not wanting pesticides applied on or adjacent to their home must register with the city to be included in a buffer zone.
