A 17-year-old girl was injured after the car she was driving collided with a Via Rail train near Gilbert Plains, Man., on Monday afternoon.

The crash happened at around 3:30 p.m. in the community of Gilbert Plains, located about 250 kilometres northwest of Winnipeg.

According to RCMP, a 2009 Chevrolet Cobalt was heading south on Highway 274 when it struck the side of an eastbound Via Rail passenger train near its engine.

The driver of the Cobalt, a 17-year-old girl from the Gilbert Plains area, was taken to hospital with minor injuries, RCMP said in a news release late Monday night.

No one else was in the vehicle, and no other injuries were reported.

The collision happened at a level rail crossing near Highway 5. The crossing was reported to have been equipped with signs and flashing lights, according to police.

The area was temporarily closed to traffic late Monday as RCMP investigated the crash.
