Brandon woman arrested after baby abandoned on street
Mom told police she was high and forgot that 7-month-old daughter was with her
A 23-year-old woman in Brandon, Man., faces a child abandonment charge after her seven-month-old daughter was found alone in the middle of a street early this morning.
Brandon police say they found the infant in a stroller in the 200 block of 17th Street North at around 3 a.m. Thursday.
The baby's mother, who was found a few blocks away, told officers that she was high on pills and had forgotten that her daughter was with her, police said in a news release.
The infant was taken to the Brandon Regional Health Centre as a precautionary measure, and child-welfare officials took custody of her once she was medically cleared.
Police said they checked the mother's home and found no other children there.
The woman was arrested and has since been released. She will appear in court on July 31 to answer to a charge of of abandoning a child, according to police.
