Autopsy pending on River Heights fire victim
Winnipeg police are asking anyone with information about a fatal River Heights fire to come forward.
Fire crews rushed to the 1200 block of Fleet Avenue around 1:30 a.m. Thursday for reports of a fire.
It took hours for crews to get the blaze under control.
"It's scary as all get-out," said Barb Enders, who lives nearby.
"When I first heard the bang, I thought it was a car accident. But when I realized it was a fire, I just stood back and hoped that the woman that's there was out."
Enders said a woman moved into the home less than a year ago.
Enders said she did not know the woman, but said she had two dogs and spent time gardening.
Fire officials estimated the damage from the fire at $380,000.
Police said they have not been able to confirm the identity of the victim, and results of an autopsy are pending.
"We have alot of questions to be answered yet. In light of the nature of the fire, there is alot of information to go through," said Const. Jason Michalyshen.
Fire officials have not yet determined what caused the blaze.
