A man is facing drug-related charges after a small fire in a Winnipeg apartment led police to a small marijuana grow-op.

By the time the firefighters arrived a man in the unit had extinguished the blaze, but something else caught their attention: marijuana leaves strewn throughout the suite and into the hallway leading to a second suite in the complex.

The Winnipeg Police Service green team unit was called in, search warrants were issued and the following items were seized:

  • 13 marijuana plants with an estimated street value of $14,500.
  • $5,000 worth of growing equipment.
  • 20 grams marijuana, estimated street value $200.
  • 3 kilograms of marijuana, estimated street value $30,000.
  • $300 in cash.

A man, 42, is facing drug-related offences including two counts of possessing substance for the purpose of the trafficking, production of controlled substance and possessing proceeds of crime, police said.

He has been released on a promise to appear.
