A look back at March 1966 blizzard, 50 years ago today
Fifty years ago on March 4, a massive snow storm blew through Winnipeg and surrounding areas. The storm came with almost 36 centimetres of snow in Winnipeg and winds gusting over 100 kilometres per hour. Snow drifts were as high as rooftops for some residents. Visibilty was down to zero and many people were stuck in their homes or offices overnight. The blizzard lasted 18 hours and residents spent days trying to dig out from under a blanket of white.
