Tourists and Winnipeg residents alike are being invited to take a stroll en masse through a new 9.5 kilometre circuit through the city Thursday.

For the second year in a row, Economic Development Winnipeg and Tourism Winnipeg announced the opening of The Loop, a self-guided walking tour of Winnipeg’s urban areas.

“We're really just trying to get people to get out and walk, of course, but discover Winnipeg's historical, cultural, architectural and modern-day gems that we promote every day,” said Chantal Sturk-Nadeau with Tourism Winnipeg.

Sturk-Nadeau noted The Loop isn’t just being promoted as a tourist activity, but to “really start showing the local people what it is that we've been showing and promoting to visitors every day.”

"When you start looking at a city differently by foot ... there's the whole concept of discovering your city in a different light, but also in a healthy light."

Organizers said they are hoping 100 people will turn out for the 3.5 hour walk scheduled for 1 p.m. Thursday.

The walk of The Loop starts under the canopy at the Forks Market Plaza.
