2nd cable worker dies after Winnipeg car crash
A secondcable installerhas died after being struck by a vehicle involved in a car crash in the St. Vital area of Winnipeg on Friday morning, police said Monday.
A 44-year-old man died at the scene, on St. Mary's Road near Kingston Row, onFriday.Police confirmed Monday that a 24-year-old man died in hospitallater the same day.
The two men, who wereinstalling communications cable for Blais Underground, were standing near a manhole cover when they were hit by awhite Camaro that had been in a collision with a Honda minivan.
Both vehicles were damaged in the crash, butthere has been no word on the condition of the drivers or others in the vehicles.
Police said Monday they had ruled out alcohol as a contributing factor in the collision. Investigators are examining the amount of traffic on the road at the time, as well as the speed of the two vehicles.
It isnot clear if the area where the two men were working was marked withconstruction signage. Policesaid Monday that the worksite was not a formal construction site, where specific regulations would have to be followed.
Police said it was too early to say if charges were going to be laid against either driver.
