Winnipeg Blue Bombers defensive lineman Jason Vega and punt returner Demond Washington have won weekly CFL awards, despite their team's loss on the weekend.

Vega is the CFL’s defensive player of the week for the second time in his career after recording a team-high six tackles and three quarterback sacks against the Saskatchewan Roughriders on Sunday.

The second-year defensive end out of Northeastern University now sits tied for second in the league with five sacks along with teammate Bryant Turner.

Vega last took home the CFL honour in 2011.

Rookie defensive back and punt returner Demond Washington has been a bright spot in an otherwise miserable season for the Bombers and on Sunday he lit up Canad Inns Stadium with an 82-yard punt return touchdown in the first quarter.

It was the second runback TD of the season for Washington, who also returned a punt 82-yards in week two against Montreal.

The 24-year-old now sits third in the league in combined return yards with 1,371.

This is Washington’s first special teams player of the week honour.

The Bombers lost the game on Sunday, 25-24, to the 'Riders, who kicked a 40-yard field goal on the final play of the game.
