A head-on collision on Manitoba Highway 6 between an SUV and a semi-truck sent one person to hospital in critical condition on Thursday, says STARS air ambulance.

The STARS crew began responding to the crash north of Gypsumville, Man. at 1:14 p.m., a spokesperson said.

A STARS nurse and paramedic were dropped off by helicopter to administer critical care to a patient.

RCMP, firefighters, and paramedics were on scene when they arrived, the STARS spokesperson said.

The patient was transported by a ground ambulance while the STARS air ambulance refueled only to rendezvous with the patient on the highway south of Gypsumville. From there the patient was transported by air ambulance to Winnipeg's Health Sciences Centre.

Highway 6 was briefly closed after the collision but has since reopened.

This is the second crash on Thursday involving a semi-truck and a vehicle. Another, unrelated collision occurred on Highway 10, said Manitoba RCMP.
