Ontario Provincial Police are calling the death of a six-year-old girl a tragedy after the child was hit and killed by a vehicle travelling on a family farm outside of St. Thomas.
Investigators said the girl was running next to an SUV driven by a family member when she was struck on Monday afternoon in Bayham. She was pronounced dead at hospital.
"This is a tragic incident and our hearts go out to those involved," said Elgin OPP acting staff sergeant Mike Butler.
The child has been identified as Melissa Klassen from Norwich Township, a region about 50 km away from the accident site.
The investigation into the circumstances leading up to the collision remains under investigation, police said, adding the family has asked for privacy.
As for whether charges will be laid against the driver, police said they could not speculate until the investigation is over.
