London man, 65, charged with abducting 4-year-old on Mother's Day
Lawrence Allen Thompson appeared in a London court Tuesday to face multiple charges
London Police have laid several charges against a 65-year old man in connection with the Mother's Day abduction of a 4-year-old girl in a northeast neighbourhood.
Police allege Lawrence Allen Thompson stopped his car on Melsandra Avenue Sunday where the child was playing with a sibling on the lawn, got out and grabbed her.
"A witness observed the incident, followed the vehicle and called police," Det. Sgt. Dave Poustie said at a media briefing Tuesday at police headquarters.
"With the young girl in his car, the man drove a short distance through the neighbourhood and it's reported he touched the girl inappropriately while she was in the vehicle."
Poustie said the victim was able to escape and run home when the car came to a stop.
The alleged abduction prompted a massive search with dozens of officers canvasing neighbours and looking at surveillance video.
Thompson appeared in a London court Tuesday and was charged with:
- Abduction of person under fourteen years of age
- Sexual assault on a person under 16 years of age
- Sexual interference with person under 16 years of age
"The witness who saw the girl being taken off the street needs to be commended," Poustie said.
Police stressed that this is a rare situation, with Poustie saying that in his 25-year of service, this is the first abduction case he's worked on.
Bail hearing on Wednesday
Thompson made a brief court appearance on Tuesday afternoon and was ordered not to contact six people, including the complainant and witnesses.
He was wearing blue jeans and a blue sweatshirt with a white undershirt underneath.
He will spend at least another night in jail.
Thompson is scheduled to have a bail hearing tomorrow.
