Law will ban rides in the back of pick-ups

The Alberta Government is reminding drivers that as of next Tuesday, it will be illegal to ride in the back of a pick-up truck.

An amendment was made to the Highway Traffic Act after a number of people were injured in accidents while riding in a pickup box.

Leanne Stangeland speaks for Alberta Infrastructure: "The penalty will be a fine of $57 dollars. That could be issued to either the driver or the person riding in the back of the box." The distinction will be made at the officer's discretion.

The new law does not apply to those whose work requires them to ride in the back of a pickup, such as firefighters or construction workers.
