Waterloo road closures, delays expected as students move in

Several roads in the Waterloo region are being dug up, causing traffic redirections for the long weekend.

Several roads in the Waterloo Region are being dug up, causing traffic re-directions for a busy long weekend during which many college and university students will be moving into their homes for the academic year.

As a result, the University of Waterloo is warning people of delays.

The university encourages people coming into town to take Highway 85 North into Waterloo as opposed to University Avenue.

Specific closures include:

  • The University Avenue West exit is closed at the Highway 85 expressway. People are encouraged to take the Bridgeport East exit to avoid construction on University Avenue. This exit will be closed until October.
  • University Avenue is also operating at half capacity, with two of four lanes dug up.

The following closures will be in effect from 7 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Sunday, Aug. 31 and Monday, Sept. 1:

  • Lester Street will be one-way, northbound traffic only, from Seagram Drive to Columbia Street West. Entrances and exits to and from Lester Street will be limited.
  • Spruce Street will be one way from Hickory Street West to Columbia Street West.
