St. Mary's hospital closes entire 5th floor due to outbreak

St. Mary's General Hospital in Kitchener says a gastrointestinal outbreak has been declared on its fifth floor general medicine unit.

Three patients and six staff members have confirmed symptoms

St. Mary's General Hospital in Kitchener says it has closed off its entire fifth floor general medicine unit to new admissions and transfers after a gastrointestinal outbreak was declared.

The hospital says three patients and six staff have confirmed symptoms, and two additional cases are being investigated.

The hospital says visitor restrictions of one visitor at a time per patient have been put in place for the entire fifth floor.

It first declared the outbreak on Monday, and closed half of the fifth floor. On Tuesday, the hospital expanded the closure to include the whole floor.

Visitors are being asked not to come to the hospital if they show symptoms of a stomach illness such as vomiting or diarrhea, or if they have visited anyone with such symptoms in the past two days.
