Man charged with manslaughter in drinking glass assault
A man has been charged with manslaughter in the death of a Kitchener man who was assaulted with a drinking glass at a Duke Street apartment.
The charge was upgraded from an assault charge following an altercation that happened on Saturday at approximately 8:19 p.m., Waterloo Regional Police said Thursday. The man was first charged with assault after hitting the deceased, Babiker Moustafa, with a glass.
Moustafa, a 56-year-old Kitchener resident, was transported to Grand River Hospital for treatment of facial injuries after the assault. He was later transported to St. Michael's Hospital in Toronto, where his condition deteriorated suddenly, said police.
Homicide investigators were notified when Moustafa died in hospital Wednesday.
The 34-year-old Kitchener man charged with manslaughter is in police custody and is appearing in court Thursday.
A post-mortem examination will be conducted Friday to confirm cause of death.
