In 2006, Canadian Forces in Afghanistan found themselves locked into intense combat with Taliban insurgents in what would become known as the Battle of Panjwaii.

Sixteen Canadians were killed and 50 more were wounded in fighting that dragged on for months. This was also the same battle where a number of Canadians were hit by friendly fire from an American A-10 aircraft.

2nd Lt. Matt Austin was one of a number of soldiers from Waterloo Region who fought in that battle.

He shared some of his memories of Afghanistan on The Morning Edition. You can listen to that interview by clicking on the button to the left.
