Waterloo Regional police have charged Hugh Rayburn McColl, a 61-year-old Kitchener man, with second-degree murder in connection to the "disappearance and presumed death" of Kate Lynn Reid.

Reid, 51, was first reported missing in late January. Her disappearance was not deemed suspicious until early March and is now being investigated as a homicide, police said in a news release Sunday morning.

Michael Haffner, executive officer for the Waterloo Regional Police Service, said McColl and Reid were former roommates in Kitchener. Haffner was unable to disclose whether the two were living together at the time of Reid's disappearance.

Haffner said McColl was arrested at Dufferin Mall in Toronto with assistance from the Toronto Police Service just before noon on Saturday. He will appear in court on Monday.

Haffner said investigators are continuing to search for Reid's remains.
